SPARTAN LEATHER HELMET PATTERN — INSTANT PDF DOWNLOAD

Build a full-size Spartan-inspired leather warrior helmet with an adjustable internal suspension and removable crest.

This detailed digital pattern is designed for leatherworkers creating a wearable costume helmet from 8–11 oz vegetable-tanned leather. The adjustable internal headband is designed to fit most adult head sizes, while the removable crest can be made with horsehair, synthetic brush fringe, or the included all-leather plume pattern.

A small-shop finished-item license is included, allowing you to sell physical helmets that you personally make.

TWO CREST OPTIONS

Create the helmet crest using either:

OPTION A
Horsehair or synthetic brush fringe with a sewn backing strip and approximately 3–5-inch fibers.

OPTION B
The included all-leather plume insert, cut from 3–5 oz leather or suede. Two staggered inserts may be used for a fuller plume.

The crest attaches with removable Chicago screws, allowing it to be removed for storage, transport, repair, or customization.

RECOMMENDED LEATHER

Main helmet components:
• Approximately 7–9 square feet of 8–11 oz vegetable-tanned leather

Suspension and adjustment straps:
• Approximately 2 square feet of 5–7 oz leather
• Alternatively, skive the heavier leather thinner

Optional leather plume:
• 3–5 oz leather or suede

The PDF includes a detailed hardware and tool list. Hardware typically includes rivets, Chicago screws, washers, and 3/4-inch roller buckles.

SIZE AND FIT

• Adjustable internal headband
• Approximate adjustment range: 21–25 inches
• Intended as a one-size-fits-most adult costume helmet
• Optional felt, cork, or thin foam padding can be added for comfort and smaller head sizes

Head shapes vary. Make the recommended cardstock or craft-foam mockup before cutting leather to confirm eye position, cheek length, visibility, and suspension placement.

Intermediate leatherworking project.

Recommended skills include:

• Accurately cutting heavy vegetable-tanned leather
• Punching and aligning hardware holes
• Wet-forming leather
• Setting rivets or Chicago screws
• Edge beveling and burnishing
• Basic fitting and pattern adjustment

This is not recommended as a first leatherworking project.

• Standard US Letter paper: 8.5 × 11 inches
• Both portrait and landscape pages are included
• Print at 100% or Actual Size
• Turn off Fit to Page, Shrink, and Scale to Fit
• Measure the one-inch test square before cutting
• US Letter edition only; an A4 edition is not included

Printer and PDF-viewer settings can vary. Always confirm the test square with a physical ruler.
